| Note From The Editor
Greetings Discerning Readers,
At
first glance, you might not recognize Mary Houston as a polyethylene power
player. The first time I met her I couldn’t comprehend much of what
she was saying in her laid back Texas drawl because I was pre-occupied.
You see, we were flying down the highway at about 70 miles-per-hour in
her convertible with the ragtop down. I couldn’t quit wondering
how she had trained her straw cowboy lid to stay in place on her head.
Then she fingered the stampede-string hanging below her chin with long,
red fingernails and I realized she was prepared. I relaxed.
Mary Houston has been peddling
polyethylene pipe in the great state of Texas for over 20 years. She is
the Sales Manager for WL
Plastics which has locations in three states and is soon to add plants
in Kentucky and Calgary Canada . She convinced Gainesville Texas to “experiment”
with polyethylene pipe for a water project and gave me a call to come
check it out.
It’s a 12-inch DIPS water line 4000-feet long and Houston hopes the project will make Gainesville ’s municipality become comfortable with the pipe.
“We have been working with Gainesville for quite some time,” says Houston above the wind noise wrapping around our heads. “Once a city gets a couple of HDPE projects under their belt, they tend to pony-up and start using it on a regular basis.” I soon realize this is her philosophy for selling the pipe.
But
what Houston really wants to talk about is the work she and other members
of the Plastic Pipe Institute (PPI) are doing with
the Texas Commission of Environmental
Quality (TCEQ) and the U.S.
Conference of Mayors. Among other things, the Mayors Conference is
a place where mayors can come together and find out what methods, procedures
and practices work well for other cities. PPI is leading the effort for
the polyethylene industry in getting face time with these heads of city
government to promote HDPE.
The new Executive Director
of PPI, Tony Radoszewski, feels the
effort is a strong tool in promoting polyethylene. “Our effort to
work through the U.S. Conference of Mayors is a key channel we are using
to promote PPI and the use of polyethylene pipe as a superior alternative
to traditional piping materials,” said Radoszewski. “I believe
it will also show direct financial results sooner.”
Houston couldn’t agree more. “Water concerns are becoming a major platform for many elected officials,” said Houston . “This is an excellent opportunity to enlighten top decision makers, one-on-one, about the benefits of HDPE pipe.”

McElroy In The News
Water conservation is a huge priority in Utah and it took a substantial pipe—the country’s first domestically produced 63-inch High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) pipe—to achieve that objective in Washington County , Utah . Five miles of J-M Manufacturing’s 63-inch HDPE DR 32.5 pipe replaced most of the Washington Canal in St. George , Utah in early 2006, saving thousands of acres of water for the county. The St. George and Washington Canal 63-inch HDPE Pipeline is scheduled for completion in May 2006. Click here to read more
