Note From The Editor
Greetings Discerning Readers,

We’ve come a long way since 1969 when the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland caught fire. Today, we have little to fear from rivers spontaneously combusting, but the news that our water infrastructure is leaking like a pasta colander has somehow reached the public and they are voicing their opinion with an unwavering clear voice: This is no longer an out-of-sight, out-of-mind topic.

According to a recent Frank Luntz Survey, 72% of respondents are either extremely or very concerned about clean water. Americans consider water a major health concern and are willing to shell out the green stuff to make sure it remains clean for the future.

The research shows that 83% of Americans would support legislation to create a long-term trust fund for clean water much like the trust fund set up for roads and bridges. 70% of them say they would pay a 1% tax increase to fund clean and safe water infrastructure for their area.

The most significant statistic that spells out the public’s opinion, is that when asked what was more important to them: How their U.S. Representative votes on issues affecting clean and safe water, or how he or she votes on issues such as aid to foreign countries; a resounding 77% said clean and safe water was more important.

The EPA has estimated the disparity between the amount of money needed for drinking water and wastewater infrastructure, and that available, at about $535 billion over the next 20 years. Thirty years ago the government handled 75% of the infrastructure funding and today they take care of about 5%.

Productivity Tip
This month’s productivity tip comes from Terry Silkey, McElroy Training&Development Manager:

“In windy conditions it is helpful to block the open ends of the pipe that are not clamped in the fusion unit during the fusion process. Placing a trash bag or other object over the outer end of the pipe will prevent wind from shooting down the pipe. This puts a stop to the wind cooling one side of the heater while it is between the pipe ends during the heating process. This also prevents “spot chill,” or rapid cooling of the melted pipe ends before the heated ends can be brought together after the fusion unit is opened to remove the heater.”

State Of The Infrastructure
Mayors met in Washington to develop strategies on water infrastructure rehabilitation. The mayors cited problems with subsurface infrastructure (underground pipes) and displayed news film clips depicting water main breaks that literally cripple cities with gushing water and flooding streets. McElroy Expands Presence in Kazakhstan and Eastern Europe
March 12, 2004

McElroy Manufacturing, Inc. is proud to announce that it has reached an agreement with Anatoli Kim and Maran Engineering to represent McElroy in Kazakhstan and Eastern Europe (including the NIS countries of the former Soviet Union). Mr. Kim brings a vast knowledge of polyethylene and fusion equipment to the region, and will play a pivotal role as the region continues to use polyethylene-piping systems to expand its infrastructure.

For the past three years, Mr. Kim has served as the plant manager for Chevron Munaigas Inc’s (CMI) Atyrau Polyethylene Pipe Plant. CMI’s Atryrau Pipe Plant is a McElroy Distributor and supplies polyethylene pipe and McElroy fusion equipment for the Kazakhstan and surrounding markets.

“We are excited about the immense opportunity for fusion equipment in the NIS region,” said Dave Hughes Director of Business Operations for McElroy. “We have been doing business in this region for the last five years and have reached a point that we need a McElroy representative in the region to better serve our customers and distributors. Anatoli’s experience with polyethylene and McElroy fusion equipment will allow us to continue to experience significant growth in this very important market.”

Mr. Kim and Maran Engineering will be based in Almaty, Kazakhstan and will serve Kazakhstan, Uzbeckistan, Russia, Ukraine, Romania and other countries in NIS and Eastern Europe.

President Bush Visits ISCO Industries to Hold Discussion About Economy
February 26, 2004

Louisville, KY–President Bush visited polyethylene pipe distributor ISCO Industries February 26th and showcased the company as a thriving example of his economic policies. ISCO was hand picked to serve as the backdrop for the President’s speech that included open discussion with ISCO Chairman Jim Kirchdorfer.

The dialogue included a speech about Bush policies and then a depiction from Kirchdorfer about ISCO’s expansion in the last few years.

“Tax cuts help small businesses,” said Bush. “And if you’re worried about job creation like I am, and you understand that most new jobs are created by small businesses; it made eminent sense to have policies that affected small businesses in a positive way.”

ISCO has grown in the last three years into one of the nation’s largest distributors and manufacturers of High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) piping products and McElroy fusion equipment. They sell pipe, fitting and fusion equipment for industrial, municipal, environmental and landfill pipeline applications. The company has positioned itself to become a major player in the much-needed water and wastewater infrastructure business. ISCO has added eight new sales/stocking locations throughout the nation, doubled their workforce, and posted a 50% growth in sales over 2001/2002. Kirchdorfer trumpeted ISCO’s phenomenal growth by saying it is a direct result of the Bush tax cuts.

“We have been very aggressive in the past year,” said Kirchdorfer. “Low interest rates and accelerated bonus appreciation benefits have enabled us to buy the equipment we needed to expand across the country.”

Bush used the presentation to call for Congress to make the tax cuts permanent as a way to stimulate more economic activity.
