Note From The Editor
Greetings Discerning Readers,

The ocean themed Atlantis Resort, located on the Palm Jumeirah in Dubai, will open its monumental doors, in December 2008,  to introduce the world to more than 65,000 marine creatures and over 1.2 miles of fresh water adventure.  The $1.5 billion hotel / theme-park, is the brainchild of world renowned developer and hotel magnate Sol Kerzner, of Kerzner International, along with others.  He is using HDPE for water distribution throughout the entire park.

McElroy Technical Service Specialist, Joshua Paul Lawrence recently traveled to Dubai to perform fusion training for the project.  Josh is otherwise known, once a month, as NBC Specialist (MOS 74D) in the Army Reserve.  He has been with McElroy for about two years and travels worldwide to perform fusion training seminars.  His military background is in nuclear, biological, and chemical detection along with decontamination.  (None of which are
required or needed for McElroy butt
fusion equipment.)
  He met in Dubai
with Tim Perkins and Bob Brealey
of Hepworth which is a
subcontractor of Kerzner
International, the Prime
Contractor.

“Bob Brealey fused 3 350m lengths of 1000mm pipe with a No.1648 MegaMC,” responds Josh in answer to my open ended question.  I give him a long blank pause as if he should know I need more information.  I can tell the military still resides there underneath the funny-cocked McElroy ball cap.  He resumes, “Bob was building the massive sea inflows which are required for the Shark tank, Swimming with Dolphins tank, and the Ambassador tank.  We had strict orders to exceed the quality assurance requirements of the job,” he continues,  “…and we used the DataLogger to log every joint.  We fused a hell of a lot of pipe in a hundred and thirty degree fusion tent.  By the end of the week, we had added an air conditioner stacked on cinder blocks to make it more bearable, but it really didn’t help much,” he finishes with a grin.

Josh also said that Tim Perkins and Bob Brealey were involved earlier in the year in a related project involving 12 sub-sea horizontal directionally drilled (HDD) crossings.  The HDPE crossings lie 15m beneath the sea and bring all utilities to the palm shaped, manmade island which has already been tagged – Eighth Wonder of the World.  Each crossing utilized a 500mm diameter HDPE sleeve through which other HDPE pipes were installed.  The maximum crossing length was about 800m.  This is the first time that multiple undersea crossings of this length and type have been undertaken in the United Arab Emirates.  The crossings provide water, gas and telecommunications to the 22 hotel and leisure developments located on the 200m wide island.

“They are using HDPE because it is flexible and it doesn’t leak,” said Lawrence. “The entire island is built of sand.  If a pipeline leaks; it could cause that portion of the island to settle which would have devastating effects on property.”  He continues, “And for areas like Atlantis, leak prevention is even more crucial.  A significant amount of the park’s pipe that is used to transport sea water and fresh water around the various waterscape attractions will be beneath elaborate architecture.”

Marble sculptures, technology for the slides and rides of the waterscape, frescos, and other theme based art along with ancient rock formations, lazy lagoons, dramatic waterfalls and lush, vibrant horticultural from around the world, will all be built above the water piping system.  “It could cost millions to fix a leak underneath some of the elements of Atlantis,” he said.

Lawrence added, “It’s the kind of tough job that requires polyethylene.  Polyethylene has proven itself on tough jobs across the planet, and these types of projects are showing engineers everywhere that HDPE is the most versatile pipe in the world.”

Nuff-said.

The conclusion follows:

In General, there was limited damage to the HDPE water systems on the mainland of Thailand and Phuket Island.  Using HDPE piping also saved a great deal of restoration time compared to jointed or more fragile pipelines.
