In March, more than 120,000 visitors descended upon Las Vegas for the 2011 CONEXPO-CON/AGG trade show. The trade show is one of the largest events in the construction industry, with more than 2,400 exhibitors at the latest event.
With 12 of our latest and greatest products on display, it was interesting to get customer response first-hand.
“It (CONEXPO) gives us an opportunity to bring our foremen together to discuss and research new ideas that we can implement into the field to have a more productive worksite for our customers,” said Tom Lorenz, vice president of Mid-Ohio Pipeline. “That way we can make their jobs more productive, look for time saving techniques, better operations and better controls. CONEXPO gives a perspective that you can’t get one-on-one with a vendor.”The McElroy booth proved to be a location to find solutions for Lorenz and others.
“The new Pit Bull® 26…a lot of my guys like it. They want one,” said Lorenz. “They’d like to have the opportunity to utilize a smaller machine. Obviously it’s in our interest from a cost perspective, we could get the same results we get with the larger 28 across some pipe sizes.”
With plenty of customers visiting the McElroy booth, a large staff of McElroy and McElroy distributor personnel were on hand to conduct product demonstrations, answer questions and get the most out of CONEXPO themselves.

Most jobsites require heavy machinery to lift and hold a length of pipe in place for large-diameter butt fusion projects. To free up some of the machinery’s time and to save money, McElroy created the new self-contained, gasoline-powered MegaMc® Pipe Stands. The pipe stands help align the pipe with the fusion machine, and then hold the pipe at the proper height. The productivity advantages begin when the engine starts. The pipe stands can adjust the pipe up to 24 inches laterally and 34 inches vertically. Once the proper position is identified, the engine can be turned off and the position is locked in place. Since the unit is self-contained, there are no hydraulic hoses running across the jobsite.
Rugged rollers with low-friction pillow block bearings allow the pipe to move easily through the rollers. Two models are available for use on most medium- and large-diameter. Between the two models, pipe sizes from 8 to 65 inches in diameter can be handled by the stands.
