Note From The Editor Water has become the top issue in Colorado where the most severe drought in history is making water bills high, citizens angry, and the debate over how to deal with it, very heated. A poll taken, found water to be the top issue outranking education, crime and the economy. The largest difference of opinion is whether Colorado should build more storage facilities or tighten conservation efforts. Denver raised its water prices 35% over last year hoping the price would encourage public conservation. Colorado Springs has also experienced a rate increase but its water company is also making conservation efforts of its own by using HDPE. The city started using HDPE about four years ago in hopes of stopping the waste and leakage of what they call "liquid gold." The city is now implementing a $60 million program to bring its water infrastructure up to 21 st century standards. HDPE is the primary pipe being used for all rehabilitation. Manitou Springs is one of the nine outlying communities following the lead of Colorado Springs Utilities (CSU). The small stream mentioned above is the focus of one of its conservation efforts. An HDPE line is replacing a worn-out cast iron pipe that was installed in the 1880's and has been leaking in many places for a very long time. The pipe is used as a raw water intake. The water goes to a small hydropower plant that serves Manitou Springs and from there the water will be reclaimed by CSU. "HDPE is making a big impact on this area of Colorado ," said Jack Madore of Mountain States Pipe & Supply. Madore has been instrumental in bringing the benefits of HDPE to CSU along with the technical expertise of installing it. "All over the West water is becoming more and more valuable. HDPE is taking over the water market out here because it is the only pipe suitable for handling such a precious resource." After reaching the top of the canyon and the point of the intake, I looked down at the bell of the old cast iron pipe and read the date - 1882. I thought about the men who had hand-dug the trench up this mountain 122 years ago. How they probably marveled at the technology of the relatively new cast iron pipe. I wondered if they would have believed that 100 years into the future, technology would make it possible to do the same job in six days.Drew L. Wilson; Editor (918) 831-9286 Productivity Tip For high altitude operation, naturally aspirated engines need fuel or ignition timing changes to operate at peak performance. The engine may become hard to start and will run rich due to the reduced air density. You will see a change in the exhaust color and the machine may not produce the necessary horsepower. Contact your McElroy representative or an engine manufacturer's rep for assistance on changing jets on a gasoline engine or shimming the injection pump on a diesel engine to compensate for thinner air at high altitudes.
State Of The Infrastructure McElroy In The News "I am committed to helping McElroy remain a leading supplier of fusion equipment in Central and South America , as well as the Caribbean Islands ," said McElroy International Sales Manager, Rafael Quintero . Quintero is the key element of McElroy's aggressive thrust to better serve South America . "The new website is a tool that will greatly benefit the thousands of Spanish speaking contractors and pipeline owners around the world." Prior to the Spanish website, many companies had to rely on third party advice about fusion equipment. Now anyone in the company can go online and research all McElroy fusion equipment to determine which machine will suit their needs and what supporting tools are available.
