Note From The Editor
Greetings Discerning Readers,

Last week I drug my out-of-shape body up a mountain in Colorado . Except for the fact that they don't keep any 'breathing-air' up there, the place was stunning. It looked like a Colorado postcard of bright yellow aspen splashed against a deep green background of spruce. At first I was a frolicking child, leaping back and forth over a small brook that slowly tumbled down to the city of Manitou Springs. By the time I reached the top, I was hallucinating and looked like I just stepped out of a dentist chair - wobbly legged, slack-jawed and drooling. I was staring at Sponge Bob Square Pants who was playing in the ankle deep stream a few feet from me and thought the water hardly looked like something Colorado residence would be fighting for. But they are.

Water has become the top issue in Colorado where the most severe drought in history is making water bills high, citizens angry, and the debate over how to deal with it, very heated. A poll taken, found water to be the top issue outranking education, crime and the economy. The largest difference of opinion is whether Colorado should build more storage facilities or tighten conservation efforts.

Denver raised its water prices 35% over last year hoping the price would encourage public conservation. Colorado Springs has also experienced a rate increase but its water company is also making conservation efforts of its own by using HDPE. The city started using HDPE about four years ago in hopes of stopping the waste and leakage of what they call "liquid gold." The city is now implementing a $60 million program to bring its water infrastructure up to 21 st century standards. HDPE is the primary pipe being used for all rehabilitation.

Manitou Springs is one of the nine outlying communities following the lead of Colorado Springs Utilities (CSU). The small stream mentioned above is the focus of one of its conservation efforts. An HDPE line is replacing a worn-out cast iron pipe that was installed in the 1880's and has been leaking in many places for a very long time. The pipe is used as a raw water intake. The water goes to a small hydropower plant that serves Manitou Springs and from there the water will be reclaimed by CSU.

"HDPE is making a big impact on this area of Colorado ," said Jack Madore of Mountain States Pipe & Supply. Madore has been instrumental in bringing the benefits of HDPE to CSU along with the technical expertise of installing it. "All over the West water is becoming more and more valuable. HDPE is taking over the water market out here because it is the only pipe suitable for handling such a precious resource."

After reaching the top of the canyon and the point of the intake, I looked down at the bell of the old cast iron pipe and read the date - 1882. I thought about the men who had hand-dug the trench up this mountain 122 years ago. How they probably marveled at the technology of the relatively new cast iron pipe. I wondered if they would have believed that 100 years into the future, technology would make it possible to do the same job in six days.

Productivity Tip
This month's productivity tip comes from Brandon Jackman ,
McElroy Design Engineer.

For high altitude operation, naturally aspirated engines need fuel or ignition timing changes to operate at peak performance. The engine may become hard to start and will run rich due to the reduced air density. You will see a change in the exhaust color and the machine may not produce the necessary horsepower. Contact your McElroy representative or an engine manufacturer's rep for assistance on changing jets on a gasoline engine or shimming the injection pump on a diesel engine to compensate for thinner air at high altitudes.

It is also more imperative to unplug the heater and open the facer valve before starting the machine when operating at high altitude or cooler temperatures. This reduces load on the machine, making it easier to start. It also reduces wear and tear on the engine and hydraulic pump and helps to prevent cavitation in the pump upon startup.

State Of The Infrastructure
The Nation's Wastewater Infrastructure is Crumbling. In its annual Report Card for America 's Infrastructure, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) says the nation's 16,024 wastewater systems face enormous needs.

McElroy In The News
McElroy Manufacturing, Inc. announced the introduction of a new Spanish language Website to better serve its Spanish-speaking customers. The website is designed exactly like McElroy's fusion website but the text has been translated into Spanish. A panel of translators reviewed the translations checking for facts as well as context to insure accuracy.

"I am committed to helping McElroy remain a leading supplier of fusion equipment in Central and South America , as well as the Caribbean Islands ," said McElroy International Sales Manager, Rafael Quintero . Quintero is the key element of McElroy's aggressive thrust to better serve South America . "The new website is a tool that will greatly benefit the thousands of Spanish speaking contractors and pipeline owners around the world."

Prior to the Spanish website, many companies had to rely on third party advice about fusion equipment. Now anyone in the company can go online and research all McElroy fusion equipment to determine which machine will suit their needs and what supporting tools are available.

Case Studies
Of the several neighborhoods that make up Newport Beach , among the prized oceanfront cities in Southern California 's Orange County , none is as well known to the general public as the Balboa Peninsula . A major main and service replacement project for that popular place was accomplished late last year with minimum disruption to the Pacific Coast 's posh yacht rendezvous or to the many pricey lodgings and residences that dot the well-traveled concrete main drag of Balboa Boulevard.
