Note From The Editor
Greetings Discerning Readers,

It’s pretty cool to be involved with an industry that serves humanity by quenching its thirst.  What other effort solves such a fundamental need, carries a higher responsibility, or deserves more thinking?  The individuals that serve the water industry understand this and thanks to the investment community’s PR push for water investment, along with the Green Movement taking place across the country and around the World; the public is finally getting the big picture about water and things are about to change.

I’m speaking of funding.  When the public majority understands the condition of our raw water sources and the unstable infrastructure that supports this precious resource, the funding will be there.  The legislation and debate over funding will reach a demanded compromise and whether the government pays the bill, loans money to municipalities, or the public pays for it all in the form of rate hikes; the funding will be there because the rehabilitation must be done.

The investing world has been throwing kerosene on the fire every since Forbes Magazine tagged water the “Oil of the 21st Century.”  This rapidly propelled water to the cover of other major magazines, TV and movies.  It is also the anchor of concern within the global-warming issue and many are remembering that the stewardship of water is a human health profession.

This energy within the industry is leading to an impending tipping-point and everyone involved seems to be propped on their toes ready for action.  The reward will be a future of clean and safe water but if the plan-makers include the buzz-word – sustainability in their mandates, Polyethylene Pipe will be positioned well with their boot lodged firmly in the door.  The environmental advantages of the pipe are unmatched and that benefit is placing polyethylene in the pole position for a run at the trillion piece pie that the industry will soon have to share.

Sustainability means a cost effective system that will last.  Polyethylene’s 100 year life expectancy with almost no needed maintenance is rapidly filling that bill and is a key reason polyethylene has captured so much of the water piping industry in the last few years.  According to The Plastic Pipe Institute, from 2001 to 2005, shipments of large diameter polyethylene water pipe have almost tripled.  Only 58 million pounds were shipped in 2001 compared to 145 million pounds in 2005.  With this growth, polyethylene now has an estimated 6% of the water piping market after holding less than 1% market share for 20 years prior to 2001.

An ever greening public opinion insures the World will only become more environmentally conscious.  The water industry is starting to understand that polyethylene is green no matter which color it comes in and it has the earth friendly benefits they seem to be in search of.  The tipping point is here and the polyethylene industry couldn’t be sitting any prettier.

Industry News

The House of Representatives Wednesday approved legislation that would authorize a $1.5 billion program for cities to repair and upgrade aging and outdated sewage systems that often overflow during wet weather events.  The Water Quality Investment Act of 2007 (H.R. 569) had broad bipartisan support, passing the House with a vote of 367 to 58.  H.R. 569 provides $1.5 billion over five years for EPA sewer overflow control grants to states and municipalities.
