| Note From The Editor
Greetings Discerning Readers,
ISCO’s Shelby Heritage calls from her mobile while chasing another HDPE lead in New York City . She tells me about a 50-million dollar exhibit under construction in the Bronx Zoo. “Dude, bring your camera and pack a winter coat,” she says. “They’re using tons of HDPE to re-create the Island of Madagascar . You have seen the Disney movie haven’t you?”
Julian King of the Lemurs : {singing}“I like to move it, move-it/ She like to move it, move it/ He like to move it, move it... Where are you giants from?”
Alex the Lion : “We’re from New York .”
King Julian : “All hail the New York Giants!”
The following week I’m there. Heritage introduces me to Chuck Conner, Sr. Project Manager for WDF Inc. the mechanical and plumbing contractor performing the pipeline work. Connor is a visual dictionary’s definition of a New York Contractor. He’s Robert Denerro with a hardhat. He immediately gives me the best quote I’ve ever heard about HDPE. He says in his thick Brooklyn accent, “You just put this pipe in the ground and fagetaboutit.”
The Bronx Zoo began in 1895 with the establishment of the New York Zoological Society – renamed Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) in 1993. WCS is transforming the Lion House, which was built in 1903 and is designated a National Landmark, into the magnificent Island of Madagascar . Additionally, the project will carry the distinction of being the first landmarked building in New York City to be certified “green” by the U.S. Green Building Counsel (UGBC).
The design of the new exhibit will preserve the architectural craftsmanship of the original building while incorporating the latest construction technologies and green building practices available.
HDPE will be used to circulate large volumes of water throughout the exhibit as well as for five 1,500 foot deep geothermal wells for heating and cooling. The geothermal systems will be relied upon to create the environmental temperatures found in a tropical rainforest.
“This project is bringing together two of the most powerful movements in architecture,” said Heritage. “The restorations of a landmarked building, while at the same time using green-building practices, are accomplishments that the city of New York can be very proud of. I’m excited that HDPE is a big part of it all.”
King Julian : “After much deep and profound brain things inside my head, I have decided to thank you for bringing peace to our home. And to make you feel good, I'm going to give you this lovely parting gift.”
Alex the Lion:“No, I couldn't. Really, I can't take your crown.”
King Julian:“Oh, that's OK. I've got a bigger crown.”

State Of The Infrastructure
According to the AWWA, corrosion for the nation’s drinking water and sewer systems costs the U.S. $36.0 billion per year. This cost was contributed to by the cost of replacing aging infrastructure, the cost of unaccounted-for water through leaks, the cost of corrosion inhibitors, the cost of internal mortar linings, and the cost of external coatings and cathodic protection. All of which can be eliminated with HDPE. Click here to download the complete report http://www.corrosioncost.com/pdf/water.pdf
