Note From The Editor
Greetings Discerning Readers,
We clog down the right-of-way through the slop caused by a flood that besieged this construction site yesterday. It looks like a tsunami zone. Bob Gajeske finds his fusion machine sitting in the same spot he had left it. Mud is packed around the wheels and frame so he kicks some off of it and starts fusing pipe. He has miles of polyethylene to fuse together for the City of Garland, TX, and he isn’t going to let a little flood slow the operation down, “We can fuse large diameter pipe anywhere,” he says over his shoulder.
The $41.6 million interceptor project is five years in the making and includes 15 miles of HDPE including four miles of 48-inch pipe. “This project really gives us the opportunity to show our experience and expertise,” says, Gajeske
Garland is similar to many other cities in the country. Their piping systems need to be upsized to handle increased population growth.
“The process is the same all over the country,” he says. “Once a city uses the pipe on a pilot
project, it quickly becomes a part of the bidding process on
future projects.”
The project involves installation of a raw wastewater force
main
and
sludge transfer force main linking the
24-million-gallons-per-day
(mgd) Rowlett Wastewater Treatment
Plant to the
recently expanded 30-mgd Duck Creek
Wastewater Treatment Plant.
“Polyethylene is reaching a tipping point
for
municipal
markets,” said Gajeske. “Now that the
industry has
become
more
accepting of it, its benefits are
starting
to
shine
and
cities are
even
discovering
new
ways to
solve problems
with
it. But
the
largest
advantage
of the
pipe
is its
sustainability,
and the role
it can play in
water
conservation. It’s the most
environmentally sound pipe currently
being used with water
and that
benefit
is
enough to
warrant
any
city
looking
into
the
pipe
the way
Garland
has,” he said. “They’re on
the
cutting
edge
of
civil engineering and their city
will benefit
from
it for a
very long time."

State of the European Plastic Pipe Industry Reviewed
Pipe joints require a high level of guaranteed performance and as a consequence the industry uses advanced technology in both fitting manufacture and joint sealing. AMI has reviewed the state of the European pipe industry – around 3.5 million tonnes of plastics are used per annum. With fittings, the market is growing in applications in sewer, water, plumbing, road drainage, gas and soil and waste. “The fittings industry in Europe has enjoyed strong growth in recent years”, remarked consultant Jon Nash, “and can look forward to a robust future despite the predicted slowdown in construction”.
