Cylinder Selection Guides

McElroy Fusion Equipment Cylinder Selection Guide Cylinder selection is a key part of ordering and using a McElroy fusion machine. McElroy has created cylinder selction charts that aid in the selection of the correct cylinder force option.

To use the Cylinder Selection Guide, select the range of pipe and dimensional ratio (DR) of the pipe to be fused. Second, select the type of pipe being used. The type of pipe determines the correct interfacial pressure to use. The pipe manufacturer can help find this number. Finally, use the graph to determine the fusion machine best suited for the task.

Typically, when fusing pipes with high interfacial pressures, a High Force cylinder is required. Likewise, when the pipe has a low interfacial pressure the fusion machine requires Low Force cylinders. The Cylinder Selection Chart does not include drag force, which is the force required to move the pipe once clamped in the machine. In some cases, drag forces can be very high.
